High Availability, especially RAC, is often misunderstood with regards to its application. It is a common preconception that RAC is to be used to improve the application performance, which is almost never true, as there are better methods to do this, as a whole or from the query tuning perspective.

When it comes though to scale up the application or to offer 24x7 database availability, there is no other better solution than RAC. Adding more resources on a single node server cannot level up to the same effectiveness.

Equally effective for high availability is the DataGuard, especially when it comes to sites exposed to complete failures or when it's needed to switch the live system between 2 or more nodes.
